BIOGRAPHY

Bertoletti was born in Rome on 28 October 1889. He began painting at a very early age and, having completed his studies, devoted himself completely to it. His first known work dates from 1904. Bertoletti looked at the pointillism that painters in the Roman area were applying at the time and at the same time drew on Nordic models of expressionist influence.

The first exhibition in which he participated with La gondola was the famous one of 1911 in Rome on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Unification of Italy.

The Roman provincial climate began to open up to European novelties with the series of exhibitions promoted by the 'Secession', attended by Impressionists, Post-Impressionists and Cubists (Pissarro, Renoir, Monet, Degas, Derain, Picasso, Munch etc.).

Bertoletti attended the premiere in 1913 and was very impressed by the chromatic freedom of the French, which he applied until 1915.

From 1913, he was one of the resident artists at Villa Strohl-Fern in Rome, where his en plein air paintings, full of life, colour and joy, were created.

Between 1915 and 1920, the war brought his production to a halt. In 1923 he exhibited at the first Roman Biennale.

He participated in the first exhibition promoted by the Valori Plastici group (which proclaimed a return to 15th- and 17th-century Italian order and tradition) in Milan in 1926.

Thereafter he exhibited very little, becoming more and more reserved and limiting himself to painting secluded in his studio. He died in Rome in 1971.
