BIOGRAPHY

Alberto Burri was born in Città di Castello, Umbria, in 1915. In 1940 he graduated in medicine. In 1943 he was taken prisoner by the Allies and sent to the Hereford camp in Texas. It was here that he began to paint.

In 1946, he returned to Italy and settled in Rome, where he began to exhibit his works. His first exhibitions were held at Galleria La Margherita in 1947 and 1948. Then in 1951, together with Ettore Colla, Giuseppe Capogrossi and Mario Ballocco, he founded the 'Origine' group. He began exhibiting works such as 'Neri', 'Moulds' and 'Sacchi'.

The originality of his work was immediately recognised and he began exhibiting in all the major galleries and museums of the world.
