Homage to nino alicino, the king of auctions.

4 February saw the presentation of 'Nino the merchant of beauty', the latest work by antiquarian and art expert Gherardo Noce Benigni Olivieri, author of several books and head of the Arcadia Department dedicated to the Neapolitan Nativity of the 18th century.

The author, after his previous texts on the subject of the characters of the Neapolitan Nativity, narrated this time how Michele Alicino became one of the greatest art dealers and collectors of his time, capable of amassing a formidable treasure trove by relying above all on his innate gifts: audacity and business sense.

"Wherever there was an important auction, Nino would pack his bag and leave quickly," says the author. "He was indefatigable, but perhaps more of a player than an antique dealer."

Absolutely in keeping with the theme of the story's epilogue: Nino Alicino's complete collection, built up over thirty years around the world, was put up for sale in Rome, in a memorable round curated by Sotheby's.

Duccio Trombadori, who edited the book's preface and the evening's introduction, said that 'it is a generous and seductive portrait aimed at restoring the figure of a person who was a friend and teacher, a gesture of generosity, a promise kept to a friend who unfortunately died before publication.

During the presentation, introduced by Massimo Tagliatesta - one of the two founders of Arcadia - the guests were finally able to see the 'Panini' frescoes and perspectives of Arcadia's Sala degli Incanti where, shortly, the 'Spring Auction' will be held, the long-awaited first event dedicated to "ancient and 19th-century paintings, furniture and art objects from private Roman collections". Tagliatesta continues: "Arcadia is an ambitious project that in April will make these rooms frescoed by Panini the site of a first auction round, but above all Arcadia is the child of that breeze of innovation, originality and tradition called Art, whose vital force can be felt in each of these rooms and which at bottom cradles every antiquarian, like me."
