Kees van Dongen, born in 1877 in Delfshaven, Netherlands, was a leading figure in the Fauve movement and early 20th-century Parisian art scene. He studied at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts before moving to Paris in 1897, where he came into contact with the bohemian scene of Montmartre.
His style, characterized by intense colors, bold strokes, and a sense of modernity, quickly made him known as a leading figure of the Fauves, alongside Henri Matisse and André Derain. Van Dongen became especially famous for his female portraits, in which he extolled elegance, sensuality, and vivid colors, often depicting women of Parisian high society.
During the 1920s and 1930s, he established himself as a socialite portraitist, associated with aristocratic circles and fashionistas, gaining international fame and success.
In 1959, he moved to Monaco, continuing to paint until his death in 1968 in Monte Carlo.
