Édouard Vuillard was born in 1868 in Cuiseaux, Burgundy, and moved to Paris at an early age, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and associated with figures such as Pierre Bonnard and Maurice Denis.

In 1889, he joined the Nabis group, an artistic avant-garde that aimed to transcend Impressionism with a symbolic and decorative language.

His paintings are characterized by intimate, domestic interiors, often populated by family and friends, characterized by flat surfaces, muted colors, and a strong decorative sense reminiscent of Japanese art and textile motifs. In his later years, Vuillard also devoted himself to large mural panels and portraits, becoming popular in bourgeois Parisian circles.

In 1940, he was forced to leave Paris following the German advance and, during the journey, died in La Baule.

With a style combining intimacy and decoration, Vuillard remained a key figure in French painting between the 19th and 20th centuries, a bridge between Symbolist aesthetics and modern research.
