Rue Norvins, circa 1920

signed lower right Maurice. Utrillo

Maurice Utrillo was born in Paris in 1883 to painter and model Suzanne Valadon, who never revealed the child's father.

He grew up in an artistic environment but had a difficult childhood, marked by health problems and early alcoholism.

To help him regain stability, his mother encouraged him to paint: thus was born his artistic vocation. Utrillo developed a personal style, characterized by dense brushstrokes and a distinctive use of white, which became his signature.

He is best known for his urban landscapes and views of Montmartre.

His works depict churches, streets, squares, and houses in and around Paris, capturing the atmosphere of working-class neighborhoods and everyday life with great poetic intensity.

Despite his inner torment and the difficulties associated with his fragility, he achieved considerable international success.

He died in Dax, in the south of France, in 1955, leaving behind a body of work that established him as one of the major interpreters of Parisian painting in the first half of the twentieth century.
