La Place de la Fontaine à Saint-Paul de Vence, circa 1921

titled and signed lower left S Paul P. Signac.

Paul Signac, born in Paris in 1863, was a leading figure in Neo-Impressionism. He abandoned his architectural studies early to devote himself entirely to painting. In 1884, he met Georges Seurat, with whom he shared a search for a technique based on breaking down colors into small dots and regular brushstrokes.

Signac was particularly fascinated by seascapes and urban views, which he rendered with bright, vibrant colors. A passionate sailor, he often painted ports, sailboats, and Mediterranean coasts. Beyond painting, he also played a theoretical and organizational role: he was president of the Société des Artistes Indépendants and wrote the essay D’Eugène Delacroix au néo-impressionnisme (1899), an important reference text for the movement.

He died in Paris in 1935, leaving a legacy that profoundly influenced later artists such as Matisse and the Fauves.
