Maurice de Vlaminck, one of the leading exponents of the Fauvist movement, was born in Paris in 1876. Raised in Le Vésinet, he initially devoted himself to music and writing, but after meeting André Derain in 1900, he turned decisively to painting.
Influenced by the art of Van Gogh, he developed a style characterized by pure colors, violent contrasts, and energetic brushstrokes. With André Derain and Henri Matisse, he participated in the 1905 Salon d'Automne, which established Fauvism as an avant-garde movement.
After the First World War, Vlaminck gradually distanced himself from Fauvist experimentation, moving toward a language closer to Expressionism and intense, dramatic landscape painting, dominated by dark tones.
In addition to being a painter, he was also a writer and published several autobiographical and polemical texts. He died in Rueil-la-Gadelière in 1958, leaving behind a vast and powerful oeuvre, which testifies to the transition from the bold Fauve color revolution to a darker and more introspective vision of painting.
