Born in 1875 in Bordeaux, Marquet studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he met Henri Matisse, who became his friend and artistic companion. He participated in the Fauvist exhibitions of the early twentieth century, but soon developed a more personal and less vivid style than the other members of the group, characterized by a sober palette and a sense of balance.

His favorite subjects were urban landscapes, harbor views, and seascapes, painted with great attention to light and atmosphere. He traveled extensively, working in France, North Africa, and various Mediterranean countries, where he found inspiration for his paintings.

He died in La Frette-sur-Seine in 1947. His work is remembered for its elegance and ability to capture the everyday beauty of places with immediacy.
