biography
Pierre-Auguste Renoir, born on February 25, 1841, in Limoges, France, was one of the leading figures of French Impressionism. The son of a tailor and a factory worker, his family moved to Paris in 1844, where Renoir began working as an apprentice porcelain painter at the age of 13, developing an early passion for art. He attended drawing classes and, from 1860, was allowed to copy works at the Louvre, admiring 18th-century French masters such as Watteau, Boucher, and Fragonard. In 1862, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he befriended Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Frédéric Bazille, with whom he began painting en plein air in the Parisian suburbs, experimenting with new techniques of light and color.

Renoir was an active participant in the Impressionist movement, standing out for his focus on the human figure, especially women and children, while many of his peers concentrated on landscapes. Among his most famous works are Le Moulin de la Galette (1876) and The Luncheon of the Boating Party (1881), masterpieces that express joie de vivre, movement, and luminosity. After a trip to Italy in 1881, he was deeply impressed by Raphael and Pompeian frescoes, leading him to adopt a more classical approach, with greater emphasis on drawing and form[12].

In later years, Renoir gradually moved away from Impressionism, developing a more structured style with well-defined volumes and clear outlines, as seen in his Bathers (1884–1887)[15]. Settling in the south of France, he continued to paint landscapes, portraits, and nudes, characterized by warm colors and soft brushstrokes. Despite worsening rheumatoid arthritis, which confined him to a wheelchair, he never stopped creating, even turning to sculpture with the help of assistants. He died on December 3, 1919, in Cagnes-sur-Mer, leaving behind an immense artistic legacy. His son, Jean Renoir, became a renowned film director.

Today, Renoir is regarded as one of the most beloved and influential painters in art history, with works displayed in major museums worldwide and highly sought after at international auctions, such as those organized by Arcadia.
