'Grand Tour' at auction on 2 March:
An impressive collection of views and glimpses of Rome for sale.
The ARCADIA auction house opens the 2021 season with 'ROMA AETERNA', an auction of a rich collection of works from a collection assembled over a twenty-year period by a passionate researcher and admirer of Rome, an essential stop on the Grand Tour, which can be considered a sort of ante litteram 'Erasmus programme'.
The Grand Tour was in fact the educational journey that the young scions of wealthy families from northern Europe made to Italy to complete their knowledge and enrich their 'international' experience. The journey took place over several stages, but always culminated in Rome, amidst the classical ruins surrounded by vegetation and the churches that adorned every corner of the city.
The auction - an ancient and regulated public sale to the highest bidder - will take place on 2 March from 3pm in the halls of Palazzo Celsi and will be streamed on various platforms.
The 62 works that participants will be able to compete for in the hall, online or on the phone are by Italian and foreign artists. Simone Pomardi, Stefano Donadoni, Thomas Dessoulavy, Jean-Baptiste Lallemand, and Carl Christian Thomsen are some of the many artists in the auction. Also noteworthy are five monochrome views with ruins by Austrian painter Carl Ferdinand Sprosse and some views by Spanish painter Juan Jimenez Martin (also known as Martino Del Don)
All the works will be visible the days before in the ritual exhibition that precedes every public auction.
