Great success for arcadia's modern and contemporary art auctions

thu 12 December 2019

A calendar full of events dedicated to Modern and Contemporary Art, Design, Jewellery and Oriental Art. The year 2019 was particularly notable for three catalogues devoted to Modern and Contemporary Art, full of exceptional works, selling beyond expectations and even setting some records. These were the two Modern Art Auctions organised in May and then the December auction.

The first auction of the season was dedicated to the Ennio and Franca Parelli Collection - Paintings Sculptures and Graphics of Modern and Contemporary Art, and presented 161 exclusive lots. In the catalogue great names including Achille Perilli, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Titina Maselli, Franco Battaglia, Valeriano Ciai and many others. Among the best-selling lots were La Beata Isola dell'Ansia (The Blessed Island of Anxiety), a lot that exceeded its initial estimate and fetched €12,400, and Giuseppe Capogrossi's Surface CP/815, which doubled its auction base and fetched €34,720.

By contrast, Auction of Modern and Contemporary Art No. 24, also organised in May 2019, included 244 lots, fine pieces and works signed by well-known 20th-century authors including Mario Sironi, Tato, Bruno Munari, Ottone Rosai, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Enzo Benedetto, Giacomo Balla and many others. Top lots at this auction were the embroidery on fabric "Mettere i verbi all'infinito" signed by Alighiero Boetti, which fetched well above its estimate at €24,000 and the geometric "Testina" by Mario Tozzi, sold at auction to a collector for €11,780.
Ottone Rosai's 'White Houses' also did well, fetching €11,780 and Bruno Munari's photographic collage 'Portrait of an Aviator' fetched €6,820, well above its pre-sale estimate. All the works at auction attracted the interest of Italian and international bidders, in particular the original 'Coriandoli' by Tano Festa, which quadrupled its initial estimate and fetched €6,200 and the abstract 'Campo di Grano' by Piero Guccione.

The year-end Modern and Contemporary Art Auction, organised at the beginning of December 2019, offered a fine selection of works signed by important 20th-century authors, both Italian and foreign, including Mario Schifano, Franco Angeli, Giulio Turcato, Pippo Rizzo, Henry Moore and Andy Warhol, to name but a few. This was the auction that also registered a sales record for Maurizio Mochetti, whose 'Freccia' reached €23,560 at auction, after a long series of relaunches.

The results of the recently concluded auction thus confirm the excellent market trend and the expectations of Giovanni Damiani, the Arcadia expert in charge of the selection of modern art works at auction, whose work has been rewarded by the results obtained in the three sales organised in 2019. Undisputed protagonists of the current market are undoubtedly the great artists of the 20th century and their works of declared historical and cultural value.

Thus, there were many notable results in this auction that was attended by Italian and foreign bidders, both on the online platform and in the auction room as well as over the phone. Below is a look at the best lots sold by Arcadia at the beginning of December. An excellent result was achieved by the "Moor's Head" signed by Giulio Turcato which, after an intense series of bids, was sold for €24,800. Among the most significant adjudications we also find Sol LeWitt's "Irregular Grid", a work created in the early 2000s, which sold well above its estimate at €27,280, Mario Schifano's "Esso", sold for €18,600 and Tato's "Il Decollo" at €18,600.
