Jōshū Ushibori (Ushibori in Hitachi Province), circa 1830-1831

signed upper left zen Hokusai Iitsu hitsu

Katsushika Hokusai, a Japanese painter and printmaker, is recognized as the undisputed master of ukiyo-e, the woodblock print that flourished in Japan during the Edo period.

Born in 1760 in Edo, now Tokyo, he began his apprenticeship in a printmaker's workshop and then in the school of Katsukawa Shunsho, specializing in prints of actors and popular scenes.

A tireless and experimental artist, he changed styles and even his pen name several times during his long career.

Jōshū Ushibori is part of the famous series Fugaku Sanjūrokkei (Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji). It depicts a scene of life in the area of Ushibori, a lakeside town in Hitachi Province. Mount Fuji is visible in the distance.

Hokusai successfully blended Japanese tradition with foreign influences, profoundly influencing nineteenth-century European art as well, inspiring painters such as Monet, Van Gogh, and Degas.

He died in Edo in 1849, at nearly ninety years of age, leaving behind a vast body of work that established him as one of the greatest masters of world art.
