The large and high quality canvas depicts Saint Barbara, a famous martyr of early Christianity. The Saint is surrounded by her attributes and supported by a pair of angels, one of which is depicted in the act of offering her the palm of martyrdom. The monumentalism of the figures, the legacy of a late Mannerist culture, the nocturnal setting, and the drama of the moved face of the Saint suggest the figure of the Milanese painter Carlo Francesco Nuvolone, famous for his vast production of profane and religious works.
