Artemis and Actaeon

The precious painting depicts the episode in which the goddess Artemis transforms Actaeon into a deer, guilty of spying on her naked while she was bathing with her companions. The characters of the scene are immersed in the vastness of a fresh wooded setting and the mythical narration is more than ever an expedient for a representation of the landscape. The support of the painting, the stylistic execution, the luministic research and the type of vegetation suggest the intervention of a French painter, active during the first half of the 18th century. The painting is made on an oak tablet covered with a thin poplar veneer.
