Saint Paul of Thebes

St. Paul is depicted according to the usual iconography that sees him as a hermit in the mountains of the Thebaid desert, where he had to take refuge following the persecutions of the Roman emperors Decius and Valerian. For the setting we can refer the canvas presented here to some works by Guercino in which the same saint is present. See, for example, the canvas with S. Agostino, S. Giovanni Battista and S. Paolo Eremita at the Church of S. Agostino in Rome.
