The education of the Virgin
The painting dates back to the 1790s, during the first years of Francesco Trevisani's stay in Rome. The work still shows a strong link with the Venetian context in which the painter had his first and fundamental artistic experiences, as can be seen, for example, in the strong chiaroscuro that will tend to fade in his more mature production. The subject, taken from apocryphal sources, shows St. Anna, Mary's mother, in the act of educating her daughter, initiating her to read and study as well as to the domestic arts. To the left of Maria a Gioacchino with an absorbed gaze watches the scene.
The attribution is due to Professor Alessandro Agresti.
