Allegory of opera

Figure of a woman with musical score in her hands. The absorbed expression, the modeled purpose, the technique of the folds of the garments and the complex and seductive play of hands in the act of turning the pages of the text, refer to the hand of the Florentine painter Cesare Dandini. The idealization of the face, without any will of characterization, and the presence of the score, suggest that we are in the presence of an allegory, a genre in which Dandini was a teacher. See, for reference, the "Allegory of the Comedy" at Palazzo degli Alberti in Prato. However, it cannot be excluded that it may be a depiction of Santa Cecilia, although the possibility appears more remote if we consider the profane character of the portrayed.
