Aeneas and Anchises fleeing from burning Troy

Interesting work of great scenic impact that re-proposes the classic episode of the escape of the Trojan hero Aeneas from the burning city, as described in the second canto of the Aeneid. Aeneas, preceded by his son Ascanio and with his old father Anchises on his shoulders, appears at the bottom left of the composition, dominated by the apocalyptic background of the burned city. Here we can see the influence of Alessio De Marchis (1694-1752), known precisely for his realistic representations of fires. The presence of the table as a support would suggest a realization of the painting not in Italy: in this case it could be an artist from the Netherlands, among the many who in those years were traveling to Rome for their artistic apprenticeship.
