Crucifixion of St. Peter

The painting is a faithful and quality replica of the painting made by Guido Reni in 1605 commissioned by Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini for San Paolo alle Tre Fontane. In 1797 the painting was requisitioned by the French, testifying to its extraordinary quality and critical fortune, and it is now kept in the Vatican Pinacoteca.

If the Bolognese painter had already been inspired ab antiquo by the work of Caravaggio (the Crucifixion for the church of Santa Maria del Popolo), it is conceivable that this copy, in all probability to be destined to a family chapel for private devotion, was made in Rome, judging by the more markedly chiaroscuro shades.
