Finding of Moses

Paolo de Matteis was a rather atypical painter of the Neapolitan scene at the end of the seventeenth century and at the beginning of the following one, also by virtue of the synthesis between the Jordanian and Marattesque language on which he based his expressive form. His style is therefore usually characterized by a composite Arcadian taste, deriving precisely from his frequentation with the Roman environment, in which inserts translated from the repertoire of Francesco Solimena make their way, as in the female figure who acts as a backdrop to the scene in the proposed painting. The handmaid who holds Moses in her arms has the typical physiognomic characterization of de Matteis, which can be found in many of his paintings.
