biography
Ugo Attardi was one of the most important Italian artists of the 20th century, born in Sori, near Genoa, on March 12, 1923, to Sicilian parents. His childhood was spent in Palermo, where his father, a trade unionist and anti-fascist activist, was forced to relocate for political reasons. From an early age, Attardi showed a strong passion for art, which he cultivated by attending the Liceo Artistico and the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo. In 1945, thanks to his friendship with Pietro Consagra, he moved to Rome, where he began his artistic career and founded the Forma Uno movement, a group of abstract artists that revolutionized the Italian postwar art scene.
Attardi’s artistic production quickly evolved from abstraction to a more realistic and politically engaged expression, influenced by his involvement with the Italian Communist Party. His works were exhibited in major international exhibitions, including the V Quadriennale in Rome and the XXVI Venice Biennale. In the 1960s, Attardi distinguished himself also as a sculptor and writer, creating works such as the bas-relief dedicated to Che Guevara and the novel L’erede selvaggio. His activity extended to Paris, Prague, Moscow, New York, and Los Angeles, consolidating his reputation as a versatile and innovative artist.
Ugo Attardi died in Rome on July 20, 2006, leaving behind a vast and influential artistic legacy that includes paintings, sculptures, engravings, and literary works. His figure is now recognized as a reference point for contemporary Italian art, with works present in public and private collections and appreciated valuations on the art market. His works are frequently featured in auctions and exhibitions, particularly at the Arcadia auction house, which values his artistic heritage.
