biography
Sergio Vacchi, born in Castenaso on 1 April 1925 and died in Siena on 15 January 2016, was an important Italian painter and one of the most significant voices of the generation born in the 1920s. Considered a master of Informal art, he built an artistic path distinguished by visionary force, expressive freedom, and a highly personal search that made him an original figure in postwar Italian art.\n\nRaised in Bologna, Vacchi abandoned his law studies to devote himself to painting, very early choosing an independent language far from convention. His formation was shaped by the influence of Picasso and Cézanne-inspired painting, references that helped define an intense, cultured, and experimental poetics. Throughout his career he maintained an autonomous position in relation to groups and trends in the art world, developing a personal and coherent visual imagination.\n\nAfter moving to Rome in 1959, he spent many years in a central phase of his career before retiring to the castle of Grotti, near Siena, where the Vacchi Foundation was also based. He was often described as eccentric, visionary, and controversial, qualities that reflect the complexity of his creative journey. In 2007 he stopped painting because of Parkinson’s disease, and in 2015 he received the Sanese d’Argento from the Municipality of Siena.\n\nToday Sergio Vacchi is remembered as a major figure in twentieth-century Italian art, admired for his ability to combine expressive intensity, figurative culture, and poetic independence. His work continues to be studied and promoted through exhibitions, foundations, and publications devoted to twentieth-century Italian painting.
