biography
Giovanni Omiccioli, born in Rome on February 25, 1901, and died in Rome on March 1, 1975, was one of the most representative painters of the Scuola Romana, an artistic movement that profoundly influenced Italian figurative culture in the 20th century. Self-taught, Omiccioli approached painting during his military service in Piacenza, where he already distinguished himself for his skills as a copyist. In 1933, he became friends with Mario Mafai and Antonietta Raphaël, joining the group of artists active in Via Margutta and Via del Babbuino, becoming one of the symbols of this vibrant Roman artistic community. His first solo exhibition was held in 1937 at the Galleria Apollo in Rome, followed by numerous collective and solo exhibitions in the following years.
Omiccioli is best known for his depictions of Roman popular life, from the suburbs to street scenes, from football matches to taverns and open-air dances at Ponte Milvio. Between 1941 and 1945, he created the famous 'Orti' series, expressionist paintings portraying suburban neighborhoods, the ghetto, and shelters for displaced people, with a strongly marked and emotionally charged style. In the following years, he focused on sacred and landscape themes, such as the 'Cristo crocifisso' presented at the VIII Biennale d’Arte Sacra in Bologna in 1959, and works depicting the Lazio countryside, the houses of Fregene, and marine landscapes.
His exhibition activity was intense: he participated in many editions of the Roman Quadriennali, the Venice and Rome Biennials, and international exhibitions in the United States and Scandinavia. He won important awards, including the 'La Colomba' prize in Venice in 1946 and the Marzotto prize in 1953 with the painting 'Pastore con capretta'. His work has been the subject of numerous monographs and retrospectives, and today his paintings are present in public and private collections, as well as in prestigious auctions such as those of the Arcadia house. Giovanni Omiccioli remains a fundamental figure in 20th-century Roman painting, loved and recognized for his ability to tell the everyday life of the city with immediacy and poetry.
