biography
Giò Pomodoro, born Giorgio Pomodoro on November 17, 1930, in Orciano di Pesaro, was one of the most important Italian abstract sculptors of the 20th century. After moving with his family to Pesaro in 1945, he studied at the Technical Institute for Surveyors and learned goldsmithing in a craftsman's workshop. In 1954, following his father's death and a brief stay in Florence where he met architect Gigliola Gagnoni, his future wife, he settled in Milan. There, he began exhibiting his works in prominent galleries such as Galleria Numero in Florence and Montenapoleone and Naviglio galleries in Milan, as well as in Venice and Rome. His artistic production spans sculpture, stage design, goldsmithing, and printmaking, marked by continuous experimentation with materials and forms. He collaborated with his brother Arnaldo Pomodoro and other leading Italian artists, participating in exhibitions of the Continuità group and contributing to art magazines. He passed away in Milan in 2002, leaving a significant legacy in the international abstract art scene.
