biography
Carlo Levi, born in Turin in 1902 and died in Rome in 1975, was one of the leading figures of twentieth-century Italian culture. A writer, painter, journalist, and committed intellectual, Levi united literature, art, and civic testimony in a singular body of work that made him a major presence in Italian cultural history. His Turin background and the bourgeois Jewish environment in which he grew up helped shape both his artistic sensibility and his attention to social and human realities.
From an early age, he showed a strong inclination for painting and became involved in the vibrant cultural milieu of Turin, where he came into contact with important artists and intellectual currents. His visual art, influenced in part by Casorati, developed alongside his literary and political activity, confirming the versatility of his career. In 1929, he made his debut at the Venice Biennale with several paintings, including Arcadia, an important milestone in his emergence as a visual artist.
Carlo Levi is best known internationally for Christ Stopped at Eboli, his most famous book, inspired by his experience of internal exile in Basilicata during the Fascist period. This work, now regarded as a classic of twentieth-century Italian literature, helped bring the peasant world of southern Italy and its profound human dignity to a wider audience. Alongside fiction, Levi wrote essays, political texts, and journalistic pieces, always maintaining a critical and engaged perspective on Italian society.
In 1963, he entered politics directly and was elected senator of the Italian Republic for two terms. In his final years, he continued to work despite increasingly fragile health, leaving behind an artistic and cultural legacy of great significance. Carlo Levi remains a central figure in Italian artistic and intellectual history, admired for the quality of his writing, the strength of his painting, and the consistency of his civic commitment.
