biography
Ardengo Soffici (Rignano sull'Arno, 1879 - Vittoria Apuana, Forte dei Marmi, 1964) was an important Italian painter, writer, poet, and essayist, and a central figure in the artistic and literary culture of the 20th century. Born into a family of prosperous farmers, he spent his early years in the Rignano sull'Arno area and soon developed a strong interest in art and writing. After a short period of artistic studies, he moved to Paris in 1900, where he worked as an illustrator for major magazines and entered the international avant-garde milieu.

The Paris years were decisive for Ardengo Soffici’s formation. There he met key figures such as Guillaume Apollinaire and, through him, artists including Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Max Jacob, and André Salmon. After returning to Italy in 1907, he became actively involved in Florence’s cultural scene and helped found the magazine La Voce, for which he also designed the masthead and worked as an art critic. In a later phase, after initially criticizing Futurism, he moved closer to that avant-garde climate and founded Lacerba with Giovanni Papini, a magazine that played a major role in promoting Florentine Futurism.

Throughout his career, Soffici established himself as a versatile artist and intellectual, moving between painting, literature, and criticism. He also took part in the Venice Biennale and, in the 1920s, worked in Rome on the editorial staff of the newspaper Nuovo Paese, an organ linked to Mussolini’s party. After the 1943 armistice, he joined the Italian Social Republic and was arrested in 1944 for collaborationism; acquitted in 1946, he resumed his artistic activity in 1948, taking part again in exhibitions and cultural initiatives.

Ardengo Soffici died in 1964 in Vittoria Apuana, a district of Forte dei Marmi, from cerebral thrombosis. Today he remains a key name for understanding early 20th-century Italian art, thanks to a career that united painting, poetry, essay writing, and art criticism, with a leading role in avant-garde magazines and artistic movements.
