biography
Alberto Sughi was an Italian painter born in Cesena in 1928 and died in Bologna in 2012. A self-taught artist, he approached painting thanks to his uncle, from whom he received his first technical instruction, and he made his debut as a painter in a group exhibition in Cesena in 1946. In the postwar years, his work developed within a strong interest in realism and the human condition, making him one of the most important figures in 20th-century Italian art.
His artistic path began in his native Cesena, where he met Giovanni Cappelli and Luciano Caldari, with whom he helped create the so-called Scuola Cesenate. He later moved to Rome, where he came into contact with Renato Guttuso, and in the 1980s he returned permanently to the capital, also engaging with cultural and film circles linked to directors such as Mario Monicelli and Ettore Scola. His work is often associated with the realist movement and with a deep reflection on everyday life, memory, and the solitude of modern ???????.
From the 1960s onward, he produced major pictorial cycles including Il quotidiano nella città, Cena, Immaginazione e memoria della famiglia, Il teatro d’Italia, La sera, and Notturno. In these series he explored themes such as urban existence, the bourgeois world, family life, and the nocturnal dimension of inner experience, building a highly personal and recognizable visual language. His research secured him an important place in 20th-century Italian painting.
In 2005, the President of the Italian Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi awarded him the Vittorio De Sica Prize for Culture. Alberto Sughi is now remembered as a key figure in Italian realism, capable of combining formal rigor, narrative intensity, and close attention to social and human reality.
