Il dipinto richiama da vicino l'analoga opera di Francesco Hayez conservata presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, a Milano, eseguita negli anni romani, tra il 1813 e il 1818, quando l'artista frequentava Antonio Canova e Pelagio Pelagi, dalle cui opere trasse spunto per questa composizione.
