Giuseppe Bessi si formò alla Scuola d’Arte di Volterra e all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, dove studiò con Augusto Rivalta. Tornato a Volterra nel 1872, aprì un laboratorio nel 1879 e si specializzò in statue e busti in alabastro, marmo e onice, lavorando anche il bronzo. Tra i principali esponenti della scultura salottiera italiana, unì neoclassicismo e Art Nouveau. Fu direttore della Scuola d’Arte di Volterra dal 1891 al 1910. Le sue opere sono conservate in musei internazionali, tra cui l’Ermitage di San Pietroburgo, l’Ecomuseo dell’Alabastro di Volterra, il Museo González Martí di Valencia e il Museo di Belle Arti di Valparaíso.
