The painting depicts a wide landscape animated by the passage of a caravan of travelers on horseback and donkeys, accompanied by herds of cattle arranged in the foreground. The composition unfolds amidst a rich natural setting, with leafy trees framing the scene, a stream leading the eye into the distance, and a mountainous backdrop bathed in soft, diffuse atmospheric light. Particular attention is paid to the depiction of the animals and the narrative nature of the episode, elements which, together with the balanced arrangement of the figures, hark back to the figurative culture of the 17th-century Genoese school, sensitive to a lively naturalism and a Baroque-inspired sense of scenography, in dialogue with the tradition of animated landscapes and genre painting.
