Pair of gilded bronze tables with circular tops in geometric inlay of rare marbles, by Stefano Atticciati, late 18th century

Antique marble tops with a Latin inscription certifying their provenance from Roman ruins dating back to the Tiberian period and dated 1788, characterized by a refined chromatic variety achieved through the reuse of ancient material, inserted into a linear frame supported by three curved legs terminating in goat's hooves, embellished at the attachment with classical masks and joined together by a crosspiece surmounted by a vase. Both tops bear, along the outer edge, an engraved Latin inscription, in an antiquarian style, intended to document the provenance and date of installation: "In Rvinis Tiberianis Hanc Marmoris Antiqvi Varietatem S.A.F. A.D. MDCCLXXXVLIII". The inscription, written in an archaic script (using a V instead of a U), refers to a scholarly practice typical of the second half of the 18th century. The expression "In ruinis Tiberianis" indicates the marble's provenance from Roman ruins attributed to the era of Emperor Tiberius, recalling a highly prestigious imperial context. The formula "hanc marmoris antiqui varietatem" emphasizes the material's antiquity, while the acronym S.A.F. should be interpreted not as "S(ua) A(uctoritate) F(ecit)" or "S(ibi) A(dsumptum) F(ecit)," meaning [someone] made/created, but as the signature of Neapolitan marble worker Stefano Atticciati. The date A.D. 1788 documents the year the top was made.
The set is part of the production destined for the Grand Tourist market, when tabletops and antique marble artifacts were accompanied by pseudo-epigraphic inscriptions for commemorative and certifying purposes. In this context, archival documents indicate that Stefano Atticciati and his family were involved in the marble industry and the movement of precious marble within the royal family. There are no accessible historical documents or archival biographies that provide a definitive date of birth for Stefano Atticciati. Studies suggest that he was active in the second half of the 18th century until 1808, the year of his death. Archival documentation indicates his work as a restorer and marble worker in the Naples Museum and at the royal shipyards. 75 x 75 cm - the top diameter 70 cm.
