Atalanta and Hippomenes

signed on the back Cornelius Poelenburg

A leading member of the first generation of Italianate Dutch painters. Born in Utrecht, he studied there with Bloemaert before leaving for Italy, where he remained from about 1617 to 1625. There, his painting style was shaped by the works of Elsheimer and, to a lesser extent, Paul Brill. After his return to Utrecht, his Arcadian landscapes, often featuring ruins and nude figures, sometimes mythological scenes, proved very popular, especially in aristocratic circles. He also occasionally painted figures in landscapes by other artists. From about 1637 to 1639, he was in London at the invitation of Charles I.
