TABLEAU IVRE, 1960

signed lower right max Ernst

On the back of the canvas, title, signature, and date in the artist's hand: TABLEAU IVRE / max Ernst / 1960.

Max Ernst, a German painter, sculptor, and poet, was one of the most innovative figures of the twentieth century.

Born in 1891 in Brühl, near Cologne, he studied philosophy and art history at the University of Bonn, but soon devoted himself exclusively to art.

He fought in the First World War, an experience that profoundly affected his creative vision. In 1919, he joined the Dada movement in Cologne and developed experimental techniques such as frottage (rubbing pencils or charcoal over rough surfaces) and grattage (scraping wet paint to reveal hidden textures).

After moving to Paris, he became a leading figure of Surrealism, collaborating with André Breton and other avant-garde artists. His works combine dreamlike imagination, irony, and restlessness, populating them with fantastical figures and visionary landscapes.

In the 1940s, he settled in the United States, where he came into contact with American artists, partly influencing Abstract Expressionism. Returning to Europe after the war, he lived between France and Italy.

He died in Paris in 1976, leaving a fundamental legacy in the history of modern art for his free, unconventional, and experimental spirit.
