Karabagh Rug, Caucasus, Late 19th Century
This Karabagh is a classic example of late 19th-century Caucasian textile production. The rug, which has a longish format, has a dark background, which enhances the geometric patterns and polychrome medallions arranged along the central axis. The interwoven diamond shapes are typical of Karabagh carpets and reflect both Turkish and Persian influences. The side border features a pattern of stylized leaves alternating with flowers, framing the whole with harmony and movement.
