Small mosaic plaque depicting Pliny's doves, Rome, 19th century

The depiction of the four doves portrayed on the edge of a bronze cantaro filled with water from which a dove drinks, owes its title to the description handed down by Pliny the Elder in the Naturalis Historia. The original mosaic, now kept in the Capitoline Museums, was found during the excavations of 1737 in Villa Adriana placed in the center of the floor of a room and was so successful that it became the subject of numerous reproductions.
