Bacchic procession

The painting traces the classic theme of the Bacchic procession, with drunk Silenus astride a donkey, supported with difficulty by the satyrs of the wood and by an unidentified figure, perhaps a young Dionysus. The group is preceded by a dancing maenad. The drunken Silenus theme, developed since ancient times, became common in the 17th century when numerous small studio paintings often made by Flemish painters spread. The canvas in question may have been made by one of the many Flemish artists who, during the course of the eighteenth century, were staying in Rome.
