Madonna Adoring the Sleeping Child

The painting is connected to the famous canvas by Guido Reni today preserved in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery in Rome. The successful iconography of the Virgin adoring the Sleeping Child became an essential reference for many 17th-century Emilian painters. An emblematic case, proving the great success of the Renian model, is the canvas with the same subject painted by Giovanni Battista Salvi (Sassoferrato), and now preserved at the A. L. Parmeggiani Civic Gallery in Reggio Emilia. The canvas presented here is proposed after a cleaning operation that has removed the subsequent repaintings, therefore it is presented in its fullest authenticity, without additions and restorations - V.
