The painting depicts a military camp with a group of officers intent on reading documents. Based on the presence of two officers pointing warily at the front line, we can understand the scene as a pre-battle preparation, and the document that is read as a declaration of war. The context in which to insert the episode is probably that of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). The intelligent point of view chosen by the painter allows him to play with sophisticated color tones, determined by the fading of the mountains in the background.
