Signed on the right: de Largillière; within a frame in natural and ebonized wood from the 19th century, with cuspidate corners and a band decorated with ivory appliqués with grotesque and naturalistic Renaissance-style graffiti motifs. Anne-Thérèse de Marguenat de Courcelles (Paris 1647 - 1733), Marquise de Lambert, also known as Madame de Lambert, was a French writer known mainly for expressing her thoughts on women's emancipation and for opening her own drawing room not only to the most prestigious French writers of the time by extending the sphere of interest to philosophy, science and social issues.
