Greek icon depicting the Nativity, 19th century
Maria observes the Child placed in a cradle-sepulcher and wrapped with funerary bandages to signify the beginning and the end; the scene is enriched by the Magi on horseback headed to the top of the mountain, by angels, the star of Bethlehem and the presence of the Trinity. In the lower part, on the left, Saint Joseph in a thoughtful attitude listens to a person who wants to insinuate the doubt that birth is not a divine work; in the opposite part the bathroom of the newborn with the midwife.
