Ghismunda and a handmaid

The image tells the moment in which Ghismunda is portrayed with the chalice containing the poison and the heart of his beloved Guiscardo, squire of Tancredi prince of Salerno and jealous father of Ghismunda; after having surprised the two lovers, Tancredi orders to kill the young man and to deliver his heart to his daughter who decides to poison herself for love. The episode is taken from the first story of the fourth day of the Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio
