VIEW OF THE CAMPIDOGLIO; VIEW OF THE COLOSSEUM

View of the Campidoglio; view of the Colosseum. Oil on canvas (original), cm 27x49. Within coeval frames in gilded wood. The delightful pair of works are a rare testimony of an early interest in urban Roman vedutism and are to be assigned to a foreign, Flemish or German painter active in Italy, still influenced by the production of Willem van Nieulandt. Their pictorial ductus is similar to the young Heintz and the possibility that he may have been executed during one of his many Roman stays in the 1930s and 40s is not excluded. The painter moved from Augusta to the Venetian lagoon in 1625 to reside there until his death and is best known for his activities as a chronicler of the Venetian festivities, which he was able to annotate in numerous autograph and workshop paintings.
