VIEW OF THE ROMAN FORUM

View of the Roman forum with the Temple of the Dioscuri and the church of S. Lorenzo in Miranda.Oil on canvas, 90x70 cm. On the back old attribution on photography to Andrea Porta (Verona, 1720-1805). For the present painting it is possible to make an attribution to the Menia, a Modenese painter trained probably in Rome at Giovanni Ghisolfi, where he stayed in the early part of the '60s. The Menia, from what can be deduced from his pictorial corpus composed of less than twenty works, seems to have discarded the most challenging examples of Codazzi to lean on the most decorative architectures of Ghisolfi, simplifying the compositions and lightening the more tender and less pictorial drafting countered. To these he used to add rather stubby figurines that can be a useful element for the recognition of his hand.
