EGYPTIAN LANDSCAPE WITH RUINS
Landscape with ruins representing the escaping to Egypt, oil on canvas, 35x42 cm, Bottom right on the fragment of signature P (...), The work is a further version of the lost painting - sold at the end of the 18th century by the heirs of the Duke Philippe D'Orleans (oil on copper 23.5 x 35.5 cm) and documented by the engraving of Charles Nicolas Varin (1741-1812). When it was engraved, the artwork was attribuited to Bartholomeus Breenbergh but was after assigned to Poelenburg by Marcel Roethlisberger in his monographic study on Breenbergh (1981, pp.31-32). In his artworks similiar group of ruins are represented (Louvre and Palatine Gallery of Florence).
