menological or monthly (September) Icon, in tempera with egg yolk, cm 44x37, Central Russia, End of the 17th century. The menological icons are illustrations of the Meneo or Menologio, the Saints and theMartyrs lives, divided as the liturgical calendar. They were realised separately, an icon for each month, on table or canvas and placed in the atrium of the churches giving the faithful an immediate idea of the saints and the festivities of the period.
