biography
Otto Dix, born in Gera in 1891 and died in Singen in 1969, was one of the most important German painters and printmakers of the 20th century. A leading figure of Expressionism and especially of New Objectivity, Dix is known for his ability to portray German society, the brutality of war, and the contradictions of the Weimar Republic with harsh precision. His work combines critical observation, expressive unease, and a strong focus on social themes.

He served in the First World War from 1915, and the experience of conflict deeply shaped his artistic vision, turning into a visual testimony to the horrors of the front line. After the war, he resumed his studies at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts and developed a figurative language that was realistic, sharp, and often satirical. Among his best-known works is the series of etchings Der Krieg, dedicated to the horrors of war, as well as numerous portraits and scenes of urban life, often featuring prostitutes, soldiers, war veterans, and figures from German bourgeois society.

Otto Dix was associated with the Neue Sachlichkeit movement, which emerged in the cultural climate of 1920s Germany, and he played a decisive role in defining it. His painting, critical of bourgeois society and militarism, also made him an uncomfortable artist for the Nazi regime, which suppressed his work and damaged his career. The strength of his production lies in his ability to turn historical trauma into images of great intensity, now considered essential for understanding 20th-century German art.

Today Otto Dix is remembered as a master of realist painting and one of the most incisive voices in modern European art. His works continue to be studied, exhibited, and sought after on the international market, where the name Otto Dix is associated with major collections and the interest of leading auction houses, including Arcadia.
