biography
Ottmar Elliger, born in Copenhagen in 1633 and died in Berlin in 1679, was a Flemish Baroque painter specialized in floral still lifes. Trained in Antwerp under Daniel Seghers, a leading flower painter of the time, Elliger began his artistic career with works dated from 1653. Throughout his life, he traveled extensively, living in cities such as Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Dordrecht, and Hamburg, where he married in 1660. In 1670, he was appointed court painter to Frederick William of Brandenburg in Berlin, where he spent his final years. His works are noted for their detailed refinement and vibrant colors, often depicting compositions of flowers, fruit, and insects with realism and delicacy reminiscent of artists like Jan Davidsz. de Heem. Ottmar Elliger is regarded as a major figure in 17th-century still life painting, and his production influenced the next generation, including his son Ottmar Elliger the Younger. His paintings remain highly valued and sought after in auctions, including those held by the Arcadia auction house, which preserves and offers some of his masterpieces.
