biography
Jean-Louis de Marne, French painter born in Brussels in 1752 and died in Batignolles near Paris on March 24, 1829, was a renowned artist specialized in landscapes and genre scenes. Pupil of Gabriel Briard, he moved to Paris at the age of 12 after his father's death, an officer in the service of the Emperor of Austria. Initially he focused on historical subjects and classic severe landscapes, but achieved greater success with paintings featuring animals and genre compositions, influenced by 17th-century Dutch masters such as Aelbert Cuyp, the van Ostade brothers, Paulus Potter, Adriaen van de Velde, and Karel Dujardin. His realist landscapes also resemble the style of artists like Lazare Bruandet and Georges Michel, with his best period between 1792 and 1808. In 1806, Vivant Denon, general director of the Napoleonic museum, informed him that Emperor Napoleon had chosen him to paint a specific work, solidifying his prestige in French art of the era. The works of Jean-Louis de Marne, painter, engraver, and illustrator, are today appreciated at art auctions like those of Arcadia, where landscapes with animals and atmospheric scenes reach high valuations for their quality and neoclassical influence.
