biography
Gianni Dessì's works are distinguished by a sober chromatic palette, with interventions on the canvas such as tears, incisions, and overlays of different materials, evolving towards vivid and luminous colors in the 1980s, as in the yellows of Campione (1988) and Camera picta (1991). He participated in major international events, including the Venice Biennials (1984, 1986, 1993), the Rome Quadriennale (1986, 1996), the São Paulo (1981) and Paris (1982) Biennials, as well as exhibitions in Rome, Berlin, Paris, New York, and Basel. From the 2000s, he dedicated himself to sculpture, presenting it for the first time in 2003 at the Galleria dell'Oca and exploring it further in his solo show at the MACRO in Rome in 2006. He created set designs for operas such as Wagner's Parsifal and Duke Bluebeard's Castle at La Scala in Milan and the Het Muziektheater in Amsterdam. A member of the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca since 2008, he served as President from 2017 to 2018. His works are in prestigious collections such as FRAC in Toulouse, Groninger Museum, and MACRO in Rome. He lives and works in Rome, with recent exhibitions like Officina San Lorenzo at the MART in Rovereto (2009) and Painting After Postmodernism at the Reggia di Caserta (2018).[1][2][3][4][5]
